Film Production Pipelines and Artist Techniques 1

The current reality is that the design of film production pipelines for exclusively in-house production differs significantly from the design of film production pipelines intended to be operated cooperatively by multiple studios. This is true not just as far as work flow is concerned, but also thinking about what is desired in terms of performance.
This tends to differ greatly for everything from tracking the progress during the production period, to the design of cost evaluation systems, to the artists’ degree of freedom and the design of a data management server which takes data sharing into account.
Since the latter half of 2000, Polygon Pictures has been putting effort into pipeline development in order to respond to our changing in-house workflow.
With this background, we aim to hold a discussion about pipelines on a basis of once or twice a year.

The topic of the upcoming discussion is referencing and instancing, with the focus narrowed down to in-house utilization.
There will be an introduction to the thinking behind the design of the film production pipeline at Polygon Pictures, as well as an introduction to the pipeline at Studio Phones, which designs and operates an in-house pipeline construction environment for film production called Derbies.
