■Overview

During this seminar, we exchanged opinions on why workflows vary by studio, and therefore how the pipeline and infrastructure this requires tend to vary as well.
In many cases, the requirements of production depend heavily on the type of work being undertaken, but furthermore, because this is a field with a high level of artisanality, in which the skill of the team on the ground is readily visible in production output, we discussed the ways in which the culture and characteristics of the studio or team can become apparent in the work, and how in the end the performance of the studio itself improves.
While such opinions make sense, rather than questioning whether they are correct or not, it may be more important to reevaluate studio infrastructure, taking “studio culture” as one key phrase. In our view, to have noticed this fact has been one way holding the seminar this time has borne fruit.

However, there is also a substantial element of indefinability in the concept of studio culture, and in light of the fact that studios, as businesses, remain in competition with each other, it has been made apparent to us that, as we explore the question of what sort of seminar we might hold that would make it easiest to debate studio culture, as well as pipelines or infrastructure that incorporate it, we must feel our way as we go.

This is how we intend to proceed when hosting the second seminar onward, feeling our way toward the sort of space suitable for discussions of video production pipelines and infrastructure, and the techniques and culture of the artists who work and grow within it.

We plan to continue improving future seminars, with the two moderator studios taking a central role, incorporating opinions of future participants and other who provide assistance, and concurrently enhancing our seminar plans and related documentation.
